Your Questions About Bodybuilding Diet

Sandy asks…
Bodybuilding diet?
I am 17 and a ‘bodybuilder’.
My workouts are very good but my diet is mixed.
I try and eat healthy all the time but I want MORE.
I recently looked on the internet and saw a bodybuilding diet plan for TOM VENUTO, he was using this diet to lose fat (around 5-7% bodyfat) and also gain muscle.
I copied it and am thinking of sticking to it and see what happens, (I need to be on peak form in a few weeks for an event).
Is it healthy and ok to stick to this diet all year round – or until I get bored, to gain muscle and lose fat or should I just eat the same diet I am on now???
Thanks

I would not use his diet. He is completely different from you and what he does might not work for you. You could look at his plan and maybe pull out some things that you think might work for you. It is best to use a trial and error approach on anything in bodybuilding. Try something for a while and if it works keep going and if not fix it up a bit and try that and repeat. Do not stick to a strict fat loss diet all year around, you will be depriving you body of serious nutrients. Fat loss diets are to be used for about 8-12ish weeks. If you want to gain muscle add in good carbs to your diet (keeping sat and trans fat to a minimum at all times), and of course a lot of protein. Don’t be afraid of putting on some extra fat, you need the extra calories to gain muscle (just don’t eat like a slob). When it comes time for your precontest diet, then cut back on the carbs, especially simple carbs. And as always, lift very intensely and listen to your body, it will tell you what it needs and does not need, when to keep going and when to stop.
Good Luck

You want to have about 2lb of protein per kg of weight you are, your best bet is tuna, chicken, steak, eggs there all a good source of protein. Protein shakes are handy also but your daily food intake should contain enough protein for you not to need them, if you do fancy taking them either cause you want to up your protein intake or like me you struggle to maintain a healthy balanced diet, i find it best to drink them after your meal otherwise they take your appetite away which takes away the point of drinking them!!!!

Jenny asks…
Can someone please explain bodybuilding diet cycles to me?
I’m 5’7 in height and weigh 72kg or 158 pounds. I want to start bodybuilding. I am trying to figure out a diet. I want a shredded look. Bodybuilders seem to switch between bulking and shredding phases. Which phase do you do and when. Do bodybuilders bulk in winter and shred in summer or bulk all year round and shred when they fancy a change in look or shred a few months in the year because its not realistic to keep up a shredded diet and look for long periods?
Thanks in advance

Body Building Exercises answers:
In my opinion, there’s no point in doing bodybuilding (with the bulk/shred phases) unless you want to compete.
The shredding is done pre-competition, usually about 20 weeks prior to competition. Otherwise, there are periods of building.
What exactly is it you want to achieve? For people who don’t compete, there really is no point in doing the bulk/shred cycles. In fact, it’s actually quite unhealthy for you.
